Description:
I have owned the two original Volumes of "Memoirs of Mississippi, 1891" for over twenty years, but only recently tried to use them for research on original issues for Mississippi from its beginnings to the Civil War, but size, format, age of printed pages, and un-search ability of them made it impossible to construct a summary of the information. I decided that it needed to be made into a more usable book by transcribing it into a modern format (digital, and searchable), making it more economical to reproduce and to share with others. I originally thought that a chapter by chapter transcription and publishing would be best, but decided that a somewhat larger, but less than volume size would be best.
This book includes Chapters 8 through 12. These chapters discuss the formation of the Counties within Mississippi, the land transfers that opened the way for legally defining the boundaries of the counties (that being the original old Natchez district and three Choctaw Cessions along with one Chickasaw Cession). Seven existing counties are not included in the original book (formed after 1891 from portions of the original counties shown in these chapters). The county write-up describes the boundary (survey) of the county, the population (free, slave, and Indian) from original formation up to 1890, major work effort in the county, sustainability of it, legal formation, unusual physical features, newspapers, political persuasions, post-offices, etc. all up to the date of 1891 (publication of the original Memoirs book).
We hope you appreciate this early history of the counties of Mississippi, and the trials, sacrifices, and political struggles the new state and it original people endured to become a State.
